Pros

Messages provides seamless cross-device messaging on iPhone, iPad, and Mac, syncing conversations via iCloud so chats stay up to date. iMessage includes end-to-end encryption, read receipts, and typing indicators for private, real-time communication, and supports SMS/MMS fallback for non-Apple users.

The Messages app offers rich, expressive features—Memojis, stickers, Tapbacks, animated effects, and inline replies—so conversations feel personal and engaging. Easy media sharing, voice messages, location sharing, and integrated apps let users send photos, videos, GIFs, and files quickly, improving user engagement and making messaging more dynamic across devices and in group chats.

Messages boosts productivity with powerful search, pinned conversations, group management, and mentions that keep important threads accessible. It filters unknown senders, syncs messages across devices via iCloud, and supports Apple Pay, scheduling links, and app integrations to handle payments, RSVPs, and quick actions without switching apps.

Cons

The Messages app is tightly tied to Apple’s ecosystem, so iMessage features work only between Apple devices. When conversations mix iMessage and SMS, features break, delivery status is inconsistent, and Android users get limited functionality. This fragmentation complicates group chats and forces users to juggle multiple messaging behaviors.

Message syncing and backups can be confusing. Enabling Messages in iCloud helps, but users often face delayed delivery, duplicate threads, or missing messages when switching devices. Attachments quickly eat iCloud storage, and restoring conversations from backups isn’t always reliable, making long-term message management frustrating.

While iMessage uses end-to-end encryption, standard SMS and MMS are not secure. Messages stored in iCloud or included in device backups may be accessible if iCloud backups aren’t protected. Users must manage privacy settings carefully; otherwise sensitive data and metadata may be exposed to third parties or through compromised accounts.
